Hello, everyone! I'm Sofia Andreyuk, a watercolorist and occasional illustrator. It's a delightful surprise and a tremendous honor to have been invited to take over the Inktober account! I hail from Belarus, specifically from the charming town of Kamenets, renowned for its early Gothic tower dating back to the late 13th century. This tower, which withstood three unsuccessful attempts by the Teutonic Knights to capture it, has found its way into many of my artistic creations.
I've been passionate about drawing since my childhood, and it always seemed to come more naturally to me than any school subject. Consequently, I never had any doubts about my future path. Supporting my nephew's budding interest in drawing is something I hold dear. In my artistic endeavors, I primarily employ pencils, ink, and, most prominently, watercolors, a medium that has captivated me for countless years. I'm drawn to watercolors for their delicate strength and their capacity for spontaneous expression.
The primary themes of my work revolve around flowers and landscapes, with occasional forays into animal motifs. Watercolor has been a steadfast companion, whether for simple sketches, mixed media projects, or large-scale drawings. Nature serves as an abundant wellspring of inspiration for me, and in my eyes, watercolor is the ideal medium for creating portraits of flowers, each deserving its own portrayal.
Previously, my focus lay primarily in the realm of graphic design. However, in recent years, I've sought out projects that allow me to embrace my watercolor talents. I've been participating in the Inktober challenge since 2016, drawing inspiration from Jake Parker's example to select characters for my drawings. Regrettably, I didn't complete the challenge every year, and for the past two years, I couldn't participate at all.
I must confess that this year, I initially hesitated and started drawing a week later, considering skipping the challenge altogether as I struggled to envision a central character. Eventually, I opted for a change in strategy, merging two lists of prompts, official and unofficial, and it proved to be a game-changer. I find immense joy in crafting light-hearted and slightly humorous narratives in my artwork. My creative process always begins with a preliminary sketch. For Inktober, I rely on Uni Pin liners for their waterproof qualities, as well as liquid and brush tools. This year, I introduced an orange watercolor pencil into my Inktober project, which played a significant role.
Currently, I'm engaged in several projects, wearing both my graphic designer and illustrator hats. Simultaneously, I endeavor to translate my travel experiences, as well as those of my friends, into watercolor masterpieces. I'd like to express my gratitude to Inktober for providing this incredible opportunity to create within such a supportive and inspiring community. Let's keep inspiring and uplifting each other!
